The calendar has 24 secret compartments containing buildable surprises, including Emma and Naomi mini-doll figures! The box also folds out to create a playmat that you can use to display each day’s build.

I decorate for Christmas with a different color scheme than the traditional red and green, so sometimes finding holiday decor in pinks, blues, purples and greens can be a little difficult. Elf on the Shelf Advent with Free Printable Clues at artsyfartsymama.com #MichaelsChristmas

We love our Elf on the Shelf that comes to visit every year! In the past, I've arranged the elf to be doing funny (not naughty) things around the house and love watching my daughter's reaction when she wakes up to see what he's up to each day. This year, I'm planning on doing something a little different. Each morning, the elf will be in a different place, but will be holding a clue to find a small, simple gift each day, counting down to Christmas day!!

Elf on the Shelf Advent at artsyfartsymama.com #MichaelsChristmas

All the supplies are Recollections Holiday products. They are found at Michaels, in the paper crafting section (on the aisle end-caps). There are so many products to choose from, including kits and all kinds of embellishments. The paper milk cartons were the first thing that caught my eye. There are 24 in each package, so I immediately knew they would make perfect elf gift boxes. I also purchased bag and card kits, straws with tags, and clothespins to embellish the cartons.

Tip: Even though all the products are already at great prices, I highly recommend watching for sales and use coupons to save even more!

The paper milk cartons come unassembled, which makes them much easier to embellish! I started by taking snowflake stamps and red ink pads from the bag and card kits and laying out the cartons.

Elf on the Shelf Advent at artsyfartsymama.com

Stamp all over the paper using both stamps. I love how the red ink looks on top of the red paper! You can stamp and assemble the cartons as you go, but I found it much easier to stamp all the boxes first, then assemble next. It also gives the ink some time to dry so you'll be less likely to smear the stamps and get ink all over your hands.

Elf on the Shelf Advent at artsyfartsymama.com

There are instructions on the packaging to fold the boxes. They were surprisingly easy, and it helps that there are already sticky tabs on the box so you can peel and stick as you go! One half of the carton top stays open and the other has a sticky tab to keep it together. Since I haven't filled mine yet, I'm keeping them closed with the cute, coordinating holiday clothespins!

Elf on the Shelf Advent at artsyfartsymama.com

Next, I cut a one inch strip from a 12x12 sheet of adhesive-backed cardstock. Regular cardstock would also work great, but I must admit that using the adhesive-backed cardstock makes things a little easier. It sticks easily and you don't have to get the glue out!

As you can see, the carton measures just a little over 12 inches, so the paper ends don't meet exactly. I fixed the problem by sticking one end near the center of the "front", and carefully wrapping it around the carton and getting the other end as close as possible.

Elf on the Shelf Advent at artsyfartsymama.com

To cover the gap, I used one of the stickers from the package of straws! The labels have a strip of adhesive, so just peel off the backing and stick it on the carton! Super easy and it looks adorable.

Elf on the Shelf Advent at artsyfartsymama.com #MichaelsChristmas

Repeat until you have all 24 cartons put together. Now you can fill them with whatever you like! I think we're going to put in some treats, and maybe throw a piece of paper in a few cartons with some kind of Christmas activity so it gives my daughter something different to do to get excited about Christmas than just eat candy.

Elf on the Shelf Advent with Free Printable Clues at artsyfartsymama.com #MichaelsChristmas

For this to work, you'll need to print out the Elf on the Shelf Printable Advent Clues so that your elf (or whatever you choose to use) can hold the clue each morning. There are ten cards that specifically count down to Christmas day, but the other 14 cards can be mixed up to be used any day you want. They all say where to hide the gift, so that makes your job MUCH easier!!

Don't do Elf on the Shelf? You can still do this activity with your kids as a fun way to count down to the big day and add things in the boxes to celebrate however works for you!!

Santa Christmas Countdown

Santa Christmas Countdown at artsyfartsymama.com #Christmas #ChristmasCountdown

Do your kids (or you) love counting down to Christmas? This Santa Christmas Countdown kit from Wood Creations was so much fun to put together, and my daughter has loved being able to start counting down the days until Santa comes!

The kit comes with the main Santa piece, his mustache, hat, blocks for counting down, and the vinyl "Santa's Almost Here" and numbers for each block. And just FYI, the kit comes pre-sanded and ready to go, but you might need to do a little sanding yourself on some areas to get them really smooth.

Santa Christmas Countdown at artsyfartsymama.com #Christmas #ChristmasCountdown

I started by painting the countdown blocks white with a few coats of Americana Snow (Titamium) White. Let dry between coats, then apply the vinyl numbers. After you apply the vinyl, press all the edges of the vinyl so that there are no areas that paint will seep underneath.

Santa Christmas Countdown at artsyfartsymama.com #Christmas #ChristmasCountdown

Next, I added a few coats of Americana Brilliant Red. I needed about 3-4 coats on each block. Be sure to let each coat completely dry between coats.

Santa Christmas Countdown at artsyfartsymama.com #Christmas #ChristmasCountdown

Once the paint is completely dry, carefully peel off the vinyl numbers. If you have any paint that peels up, or notice some of the red paint bled, just touch it up with the white or red paint with a small paint brush. After the touch-ups are dry, spray a coat or two of polyurethane varnish on top to protect the paint and give it a nice glossy finish.

If you don't want to do this technique, no problem! Just paint the blocks red, and apply the vinyl! The black vinyl on the red looks really nice, too.

Santa Christmas Countdown at artsyfartsymama.com #Christmas #ChristmasCountdown

To paint Santa, it's a but trickier, but definitely doable. Place the hat and mustache piece on the large Santa piece and lightly mark with a pencil about halfway under the hat piece, and a semi-circle around the mustache to form the face. You'll also need to make a circle on the mustache piece for the nose, and a small area on the hat piece for the red to show through/for the band and "puff" on the end of his hat.

Once you have everything marked, get painting! I mixed my own concoction for the skin color, but Americana does carry a few different flesh-tones. I mainly used a sponge brush on all the large pieces, and a smaller paintbrush for the smaller details.

*Yes, pizza boxes are extra handy when you have to craft on the couch!!

Santa Christmas Countdown at artsyfartsymama.com #Christmas #ChristmasCountdown

Once all the paint is dry, glue the mustache on with E6000, hot glue, or wood glue (don't attach the hat piece yet). Let the glue dry, then dot on some eyes with the end of a paintbrush dipped in black paint or use a permanent marker. You can pre-mark the eyes with a pencil if you are nervous about it or want to make sure that the eyes are even/where you want them. Black paint is hard to remove or cover, especially with a light-colored paint!!

Santa Christmas Countdown at artsyfartsymama.com #Christmas #ChristmasCountdown

Apply the "Santa's Almost Here" vinyl, and press well to make sure there aren't any air bubbles. The project could be complete at this point, but if you know anything about me, it wouldn't be an Artsy-Fartsy Mama project without glitter!

With a small paintbrush, paint some Mod Podge on the beard area, then pour white glitter over top. Let sit for a minute or two, then stand Santa up and tap the excess glitter off. Repeat for the mustache (not the nose), hat band, and hat puff. Since the hat isn't attached yet, you won't get red glitter all over the hat band. Once the red glitter areas are dry, attach the hat piece with your glue of choice.

A few tips: I highly recommend working in small areas at a time on the beard. Otherwise, the place you started painting could be dry by the time you get to the other side. I also took the time to carefully paint the Mod Podge around the vinyl. It was time consuming, but the effect in the end was worth the effort.

Santa Christmas Countdown at artsyfartsymama.com #Christmas #ChristmasCountdown

I'm sure you're thinking, "but I HATE when the glitter comes off and gets all over the house!!" While I do love glitter, my husband isn't a huge fan of having to go to work covered in it. So, to prevent most of the glitter from coming off, take it outside and give it a few coats of the polyurethane varnish (spray paint). It also adds an extra glossy finish that brings it all together.

Shop Wood Creations online, or you can visit one of their store locations in Utah and Idaho. You can also follow them on Facebook for new products, updates, and giveaways!

Disclosure: I received the Santa Christmas Countdown kit in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own.

I love advents and countdown calendars. I count down to almost every holiday, especially for birthdays and Christmas. I found an easy way to make a Christmas countdown was to just make an image myself, put it in a frame, and write the numbers on the glass! Easy, cute, and unique.

Last year I put this design together with intentions of sharing them... but I didn't get them done in time!
Lucky for you, they are ready to go THIS year - and I have added a couple of extra designs. Of course, the backgrounds are covered in glitter. Gotta have that holiday sparkle!!
