Polymer Clay Donut Jewelry

DIY Donut Necklace Tutorial at artsyfartsymama.com

Donuts are probably one of my favorite treats. I, of course, love the taste, but I also love all the different colors, shapes, and you can't forget the sprinkles!! Since they are so adorable, I decided to create some fun donut jewelry out of polymer clay. Don't get intimidated - you can do it, too!! It's just like playing with play dough, but for adults (and older kids)!!

To make your own donut jewelry, you'll need:
  • Polymer Clay (I prefer Sculpey brand) in Tan, and any other colors you want for frosting & sprinkles
  • Eye Pin
  • Old Paint Brush or Tooth Brush
  • Clear Polyurethane Spray Paint
  • Super Glue
  • Jump Ring (for necklace)
  • Ring Base (for rings)

The tan clay is going to be the base of your donut. Knead a 1/2-1 inch ball of tan clay in your hands until it's pliable. Depending on the size you want, you can add or take away clay at this point. Roll it into a ball (doesn't have to be perfect), and lightly smash it until it's about 1/2" tall.

Using an old paint brush or tooth brush, lightly brush the clay to give it some texture. The harder you brush, the deeper the texture will be.

For this tutorial, we wanted purple frosting. Choose whatever color clay for frosting you want, and roll about 1/4 inch or so ball. Press it or roll it with a rolling pin until it's pretty thin (see image above), and give it an odd shape. The best part of making these donuts is that no donut is perfect, so any mistake you think you made just makes yours unique!

Lay the frosting over the donut piece. If it's too big, tear off some of the clay and start over on the frosting. If you don't have enough, you can try rolling it out a little more or add a little more clay. Lightly press down over all the frosting to remove any air bubbles and to stick the pieces together. Press the edges down a little more around the top edge and sides of the donut until you get the look you like.

To remove some of the fingerprints, you can lightly rub your finger on the top of the clay until the fingerprints disappear. You could also use a small rolling pin or something smooth and lightly run it across the clay to smooth it out.

Next, use the end of a paint brush, round clay tool, or use a pencil and poke a hole in the center through the top. Some of the clay will get on the end of the tool, so peel it off and carefully bring it back up through the donut. Smooth out the bottom of the donut if needed.

Now the best part - sprinkles!! Choose your sprinkle colors, and roll a tiny piece (I really mean tiny!) into a worm. Use your fingernail or small cutting tool to cut a tiny piece off the end. Depending on the kind of sprinkles you want, roll the clay into balls or into a sprinkle shape. Just make sure you lightly press them down so they stick to the "frosting".

Repeat the sprinkle making with multiple colors until your donut looks just how you want it. Donuts look cute with all different color sprinkles, or all in one color (or none at all!). The choice is totally up to you and your...taste.

Cut the eye pin so it's about 1/2" long. Press it into the top center of the donut. Now you can bake your donut according to package directions. Let it cool completely before handling it so you don't get burned or ruin your creation!!

Once the donut has cooled, you can give it some shine with some clear spray paint. This will also protect the clay and give it longer wear.

I also had the problem of eye pins that were able to come out, so I added a drop of super glue to the eye pin and stuck it back into the donut.

Once the donut has dried, you can add a jump ring to the donut pendant and add it to a chain for a necklace!! This donut measures about an inch wide and 1/2 inch thick.

I also wanted to make myself a donut ring! So I just created the donut and baked it without an eye pin. Then I super glued it to a ring base, and voila!!

Of course, my daughter also wanted a donut necklace. Instead of the traditional chain, I added a jump ring, and let her create her own necklace using pony beads from Craft Project Ideas and Stretch Magic. Once she had all the beads on, we added the donut pendant and tied the necklace off.

What do you think? What color donuts would you make?
