Resin House Key Christmas Ornament

Make a House Key Christmas Ornament out of resin to commemorate your new home!

Resin House Key Christmas Ornament

Did you or someone you know move into a new home this year? Why not make an ornament to commemorate the occasion? I made this House Key Christmas Ornament out of resin, and I am so excited to gift it to my brother for Christmas this year. I think it will become a special keepsake for them when they hang the ornament on their tree each year. I'm keeping the holiday spirit going by sharing FREE cut files with you so you can make your own House Key Ornaments using resin OR your Cricut machine!

I wanted to try making this ornament out of resin, but didn't have a mold. So, I designed the this House Key Ornament and first printed it on our 3D printer. I used that as my base and poured the silicone mold* using EasyMold Silicone Rubber. After removing the 3D printed piece from the mold, you get this mold that is perfect for recreating the shape in resin!

**If you don't want to use resin, another great option is to use the House Key Ornament Base cut file with your Cricut Maker to cut it out of chipboard, or wood instead!

Prepare the EasyCast Clear Casting Epoxy according to package directions. Be sure to protect your workspace, work in a well-ventilated area, and wear disposable gloves. Pour in equal parts of resin and hardener to the mixing cup. Slowly stir the resin mixture together with a stir stick for two minutes.

Pour the resin into the clean mixing cup. Add a drop of red resin dye and sprinkle in a generous amount of fine red glitter. Stir the resin mixture again for another minute or two with a clean stir stick until evenly incorporated.

Slowly fill the mold to the top with resin. Pop any bubbles that rise to the top using a lighter, heat gun, or by blowing through a straw. You could also lightly spritz the mold with 91% alcohol to remove surface bubbles.

Leave the resin to cure in an undisturbed, well ventilated area for 24 hours. You will know that the resin is completely cured when it is no longer tacky to the touch.

Use your favorite Cricut (or other vinyl cutting machine) to cut out the ornament wording using white adhesive vinyl. "Weed" the excess vinyl by removing all of the parts that don't belong in the design. I usually start peeling away the outer edges, starting at the corner and then working my way around the design. Then I use weeding tools to remove the smaller pieces of the design.

Cut a piece of transfer tape and lay it over the vinyl. Use the scraper tool to press it down well on both the front and back.

Separate the piece of vinyl with the year. Remove the vinyl backing, and place the vinyl at the bottom of the key at an angle. Slowly peel the transfer tape away from the vinyl. If the vinyl is still sticking to the transfer tape, lay it back down and press it again with the scraper tool.

Center the larger portion of vinyl on the house part of the key ornament. Use the scraper tool again to press the vinyl down and to remove any air bubbles. Slowly peel the transfer tape away from the vinyl. If the vinyl is still sticking to the transfer tape, lay it back down and press it again with the scraper tool.

Thread a piece of ribbon, twine, or string through the hole in the ornament. Tie the ends together.

Hang the ornament on your tree every year to celebrate the memories of your first Christmas in your new home. Because it is made of resin, this keepsake ornament is sure to last for years! If you move a lot, you could make new ornaments for each new home, and end up with an entire collection of memories hanging on your tree each year.

I hope you enjoy this project, and as always, I would love to see your creations if you decide to make it yourself. Please share your projects and tag me on InstagramFacebook, or leave a comment/photo on the project pin on Pinterest!
