I'm excited to introduce you to the newest crafting tool to the Artsy-Fartsy Mama craft room: the xTool M2! If you're looking to step into the world of laser crafting, this really is one of the best all-in-one machine for beginners. From print and cut to engraving all kinds of materials, crafters of all skill levels can use the M2 to create all kinds of projects to support their hobbies and small businesses. Now that I've had some time to work with it, I'm excited to show you everything you need to know about getting started with the xTool M2 from unboxing to first cuts and beyond!
Unboxing the machine couldn't be easier - unless someone else does it for you! Everything you need is enclosed inside the machine, which is packed neatly inside of the box. What makes this the ideal all-in-one machine for creating and selling custom full-color projects is the interchangeable laser and printing modules.
I love how easy the xTool M2 makes it to take your projects to the next level. The magnetic connections mean you can effortlessly swap out the 10W/20W diode laser or CMYK print module in seconds. The machine auto-detects what's plugged in, taking all the hassle out of moving from full-color printing right into laser cutting!
After setting it up in your workspace, it’s completely plug-and-play. You can immediately get right to work crafting your first project!
The print and cut feature is surprisingly seamless! Using the high-resolution 1200 DPI CMYK Inkjet Printing Module, you can print and cut vivid, full-color designs in a single run. The 15.4 x 11.4 inch print bed gives you plenty of space to work with, and I’ve already had a blast testing on cardstock, sticker paper, and wood for some really cool upcoming projects!
Whenever I'm working with a new machine, getting started is the scariest part. To help you get comfortable with the machine, I'm walking you through the coaster tutorial! First things first: just like Cricut uses Design Space, xTool uses its own software called xTool Studio. Download the software and log in.
Finding the built-in projects is super easy: click the three dots in the upper right-hand corner, select "Project tutorial" from the drop-down menu. Then you are prompted to choose a project from the 3 tutorials. Select "coaster" and then click "Start the tutorial" to move to the next step.
Next you'll need to select a few initial settings. First, you choose your processing mode - whether that's standard laser processing, inkjet printing, print then cut, etc. You'll also need to select your material, which also has a variety of options to choose from and most include pre-set settings. I love how visual xTool Studio is: the menus feature helpful images for each option so you know exactly what to pick.
Snap the magnetic clips onto the corners of your sample wood piece, then center it at the bottom of the machine bed. Once the lid is closed, head back to your computer screen!
Click the small camera icon to refresh the overhead view. You'll see a real-time picture of the machine bed, making it super easy to drag and drop your coaster design so it lines up perfectly on your wood!
Next, hit the small ruler icon beside the camera icon and then click on your piece of wood. The machine takes over from there to measure the material thickness automatically!
Before hitting "Process" to start cutting, click "Framing" in the bottom right corner (just above "Processing"). This lets you preview the exact area where the machine will be cutting so you can double-check that your design lines up perfectly!
There is something so satisfying about watching the laser work. It’s honestly mesmerizing to see it cut through the wood with such precision!
Once the machine finishes cutting, open the lid, unclip the wood piece, and clear away any stray bits. Cutting wood leaves behind a bit of sticky resin and soot on the bed, so make sure to wipe it down thoroughly with a microfiber cloth and isopropyl alcohol to keep your workspace clean and safe to use!
Look at how well the M2 cut this coaster! Even the tiny, intricate details turned out beautifully. Considering this was just the starter test project, I can’t wait to see what else I can make with this machine!
