Spirit Riding Free DIY Bottle Cap Necklace + Caramel Popcorn Recipe

Season 6 of Spirit Riding Free is headed to Netflix on August 17th, and we can't wait! My daughter loves our "girls-only days" and asked if the two of us could spend some time together catching up on episodes of Spirit Riding Free to get ready for the new season. Since I love the series as well, I enthusiastically made plans for our own wild adventure including printable Spirit Riding Free activity pages, a DIY bottle cap necklace, and some delicious homemade Caramel Popcorn to share!

Spirit Riding Free, is a fun series full of adventure and friendship that is set during the 19th century in the small town of Miradero, Texas. Lucky is a 12-year-old girl who has recently moved from the city to Miradero. She encounters a wild kiger mustang named Spirit (who is the offspring of Spirit and Rain from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron), and gradually bonds with the stallion. Lucky soon makes friends with fellow classmates and horse owners, Pru and Abigail, and the three embark on wild adventures across the land.

To start our girls day, we went to Walmart to get some Pop Secret Homestyle popcorn (our favorite) and ingredients for our Caramel Popcorn. Pop Secret popcorn, has unbeatable taste with better ingredients and inventive flavors, and is a staple snack at our house. I love that I can feel good about sharing a delicious, high-quality snack with my family while we watch our favorite shows together. Like any trip to Walmart, we stopped to check out the toy aisle. My daughter spotted a Lucky and Spirit Spirit Riding Free figure set and we just had to bring it home!

Caramel Popcorn Recipe

The Caramel Popcorn is easy to make. Pop the popcorn according to package directions and cook up the caramel from our recipe. Pour the popcorn out on a baking sheet and drizzle the hot caramel overtop. Next, bake the popcorn for a perfectly crunchy coating!

After baking, pour the popcorn into a bowl to cool and then share with the whole family! This Caramel Popcorn is a special snack my family loves to make for movie parties, road trips, and rainy Sunday afternoons. My daughter loves cooking in the kitchen together, and I enjoy creating these special memories with her.

Caramel Popcorn
Recipe adapted from 2 Sisters 2 Cities

Ingredients:
1 bag (about 12 cups) Pop Secret Homestyle microwave popcorn, popped
¼ cup (1/2 stick) of unsalted butter
½ cup of light brown sugar, packed
2 Tbsp light corn syrup
1 tsp salt
⅛ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 300ยบ. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray.
  2. Pop popcorn according to package directions and pour it onto the baking sheet. Remove any un-popped kernels.
  3. Melt the butter in medium pot on medium heat.
  4. Add in brown sugar and corn syrup. Stir until sugar dissolves.
  5. Bring mixture to a boil, then turn the heat down to low. Simmer for 5-6 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds.
  6. Turn off heat and stir in salt, baking soda and vanilla extract.
  7. Drizzle the caramel over the popped popcorn. It will be very hot, so be careful! It's okay if you end up having large clumps of caramel on the popcorn. The caramel hardens quickly as it cools.
  8. Place the pan of popcorn into the oven.
  9. Bake the caramel popcorn for 15-20 minutes. The caramel will melt again as it heats up, so use a spatula to stir the popcorn and distribute the caramel about every 5 minutes. The finished caramel on the popcorn will have a deep golden/amber color.
  10. Remove the popcorn from the pan and pour it into a bowl. Stir it around and let the caramel corn cool. Store in an airtight container.

Print out the 4x6" Free Printable Spirit Riding Free Bottle Cap Images on photo paper. Choose which image you want to use and cut it out with a 1" circle punch. My daughter's first choice was a picture of Lucky and Spirit!

Carefully place an epoxy sticker over the design. Be careful not to touch the back of the epoxy sticker or the front of the image too much. You'll be able to see your fingerprint on the finished product! Use a popsicle stick or something with an edge to rub the back of the image to help get the air bubbles out.

Add a small circle of glue on the bottle cap pendant. Press the epoxy image into the bottle cap and make sure to center it. Let the pendant dry for a few hours (according to package directions).

You can string the pendant onto your favorite chain, or you can create your own necklace using beads. My daughter loves making necklaces, so she was thrilled to arrange a variety of "bubble gum" beads from our stash to coordinate with Spirit! We don't have a bead tray, so I just use a piece of felt to keep the beads in place.

Thread the beads onto wire or elastic, and make sure to keep the bottle cap pendant in the center of your bead design.

This is such a fun and creative activity for tweens for a girl's night or just for fun. My favorite part is seeing my daughter feel empowered and confident when she wears her own necklace designs.
