DIY Luna Lovegood Costume

Accio costume! Whether you're a wizard or a muggle, this Luna Lovegood costume is perfect for Halloween or cosplay!

DIY Luna Lovegood Costume

For Halloween this year, my daughter asked me to help her put a costume together to look like Luna Lovegood, a friend of Harry Potter. We are both obsessed with Harry Potter, so this was a fun challenge! Instead of going store-bought, we were able to DIY/thrift everything we needed for this costume which saved us a lot of money and allowed us to get creative. If you also admire this unique character, this costume is perfect for Halloween and cosplay!

“The girl gave off an aura of distinct dottiness. Perhaps it was the fact that she had stuck her wand behind her left ear for safekeeping, or that she had chosen to wear a necklace of Butterbeer caps, or that she was reading a magazine upside down.”

Luna Lovegood's character is a bit quirky and eccentric, which is obvious in her choice of clothes and accessories. From her Spectrespecs to her radish earrings, Luna's costume is all about the details. You can make all of these accessories yourself - I'll show you how!

In Harry Potter, Dirigible Plums are magical plant that resemble an orange radish. Harry sees Luna wearing some of these as earrings, and thinks it's pretty strange. After doing a little research, it turns out that Dirigible Plums attached at the forehead help Ravenclaws to "enhance the ability to accept the unexpected."

Making our own version of Luna's Radish Earrings was actually pretty simple! All you need is some red/orange, green, and white seed beads and jewelry wire. Depending on whether your ears are pierced or not, you will also need some clip-on earring blanks or earring hooks. Follow this radish earring tutorial for beading/assembly instructions.

Luna also wears a Butterbeer Cork Necklace, with the Butterbeer cork as a pendant. Its purpose is supposedly to "keep Nargles away". Here's how you can make your own Luna Butterbeer Cork Necklace:

First, find a cork. This can be new from the craft store, or used from this weekend's wine. Glue a screw eye pin into the top of the cork and set it aside to dry. String a variety of blue seed beads onto two different lengths of jewelry wire. You want the necklace to hang lower on the chest area, so measure accordingly.

Tie the ends of the wire together to keep the beads in place, and then attach the two necklaces together. Hook a larger jump ring through the eye pin on the cork and place the two necklaces inside. Close the ring, and the necklace is ready to wear!

Luna's father publishes The Quibbler magazine, so she's usually seen carrying a copy around with her. When Harry first meets Luna, she is reading this copy of The Quibbler but holding it upside-down. I only thought it necessary to include the magazine with the costume!

I found the magazine printables on a site that is no longer up, so I'll share the file with you here*. I printed the cover pages on cardstock, then cut away the white edges. Next, I found a magazine that I got in the mail and traced the printed cover on the front. I used my Cricut TrueControl Knife to trim the magazine down. After a bunch of tape runner lines, I stuck the covers on the back and front of the magazine. I also added some clear tape down the spine of the magazine to keep the two pages together.

**If I can find the original designer of the cover, I will update this post!

Luna is also known for wearing a pair of Spectrespecs. They are large, colorful glasses that are given away in the issue of The Quibbler. According to Luna, the Spectrespecs allow wizards to see invisible creatures!

I found a pair of plastic Spectrespecs that would work great for the costume, but it would be difficult for my daughter to wear them since she already wears glasses. Instead, I made up some printable Spectrespecs to stick on top of her glasses for the same look!

Download and print out the Free Printable Spectrespecs on cardstock. Carefully cut the pieces out, including the eye holes. I recommend laminating the glasses if you are going to be wearing these a lot!! Fold the side pieces over on the straight end and glue them onto the glasses so that they can be worn. If you already wear glasses, just stick the front piece onto your glasses with some glue dot/tape on the corners and bridge!

Luna carries around a crocheted messenger bag. I am no good at crochet, so I left the job up to my sister and my mom. This Navy Tweed yarn is the perfect shade, and I love the additional specks of color! Like I said, I don't know much about the crochet world... I was told it was made as a rectangle, then sewn up the sides. Next, attach a strap to go diagonally around the shoulder. The finished bag measures about 9.5" wide, and about 9" tall. It's the perfect size to hold the magazine (the title will show out the top), a wand, and of course, candy from trick or treating!

If you prefer to follow a pattern, this Luna Lovegood Crochet Bag Pattern would be great!

The clothing for the costume was a mix of clothing we had, and things we found at the thrift store:
• Instead of a skirt, she wore a unicorn/space dress. You can find lots of similar ones at Walmart or Target.
• The coat/jacket was from the thrift store! We found it in the women's suit section, but have also seen some similar ones with other sweaters and jackets.
• The blue leggings were also thrifted, but you can easily find some plain blue ones at Walmart/Target. Another option is to dye some thick tights or white leggings.
• Colorful, striped socks are almost anywhere. Tuck the leggings into the socks, and then bunch them down to get this look!
• Luna wears high top sneakers, so our DIY Galaxy Shoes were perfect! Honestly, you could wear any shoes you wanted, or visit the thrift store for an affordable option if they won't be worn much after Halloween.

Hope you are inspired to create your own Luna Lovegood costume! I would love to hear what you think and if you make your own Harry Potter-inspired costumes this year!
