No. 2 Poop Pencil Toppers

Kids (and let's be honest, adults too) have always been crazy about the poop-emoji, and poop-themed toys are all the rage this year. So, it's really no surprise that there are also a ton of poop-esque crafts and even recipes out there! Now you can make any pencil or pen into a punny No. 2 pencil with a DIY No. 2 Poop Pencil Topper that is made with (surprise!) a glue gun!

I’m so happy to be participating in this special Craft Lightning to celebrate the publishing of Hot Glue Hacks and Crafts, by Angie Holden (The Country Chic Cottage) and Carolina Moore (30 Minute Crafts)!

To make these funny little No. 2 Poop Pencil Toppers, here are the supplies you'll need:

• Glue Gun (I love this one!)
• Wooden dowel (the same diameter as a pencil), or a pencil

Start with a wooden dowel the same diameter as a pencil, OR you can use a pencil. If you decide to use a pencil (I did), just make sure that the pencil is unsharpened. You can also remove the eraser and metal band*. The pencil I used had a design made of plastic wrapped around it (like these ones). If you have one of these, peel the wrap off before you get started. You can see the bare pencil I used in the image above.

*Fun fact: the metal band is called a "ferrule".

Heat up your glue gun. I used low temperature, but you can use whatever you have. I just like how the lower temperature dries faster. Add a layer of glue at the end of the pencil (not the end that had the eraser) and down about 1/2" - 1".

Let the glue cool completely. After a lot of trial and error (and I mean A LOT), it really helps to remove the glue from the pencil at this point. You can try to twist the glue off of the pencil, which worked great for me on the first few tries. If it's not budging (which also happened), use a knife blade to cut a line from the end (not the tip) of the pencil down to the end of the glue and you can peel the glue away from the pencil.

Put the glue "cap" back on the pencil (which will slide on and off of the pencil easily now), and use the glue gun to close up the seam if you cut it with a knife blade. Add a thick line of glue around the base of the "cap". Let it cool/set before adding another line of glue, otherwise the glue lines will melt into each other and you'll have a giant glue blob instead. Add 2-3 more lines of glue until you reach the top of the cap.

On the tip of the cap, add a glob of glue and try to leave a pointed tip, like when you're decorating a cupcake. Even better if you have a glue "string" hanging from it as you pull the glue gun away. As the glue cools, it can sometimes even itself out into a smooth, rounded top. "Poops" have that signature swirl at the top! So, if the top starts to sink down, just give the glue string a gentle tug while the glue is still hot and pull it back up until it cools in the right shape. You can also tip the pencil upside down/left/right to keep it in shape as it cools.

Make as many poops as you want! They are a lot of fun to make, and each one looks different. The more you practice, the better you'll get.

See that little fella on the left? The blue inside the pencil topper is the reason why you need to remove the plastic pencil wrapper if there is one. When I glued over it, the wrapper melted to the glue and won't come off. The topper is still usable, but it took some work to remove the excess.

Use some FolkArt Multi-Surface Paint in Real Brown, Licorice (black), and Wicker White. This paint is meant to cover practically any surface and works beautifully on hot glue! You'll also need some fine detail brushes to work on such a small project.

Paint the brown onto the glue one thin coat at a time. If you paint it on thick it will come off in spots as you paint, making it look splotchy. Let the paint dry before adding another coat. I only needed 2-3 coats total for full coverage.

Use some white paint and an extra small detail brush to paint round circles for eyes. They can be as big or as small as you want. In fact, adding eyes is totally optional! Once the white paint has dried, paint a small, black circle inside the white circles. Let the paint dry completely.

To protect the paint and prevent it from scratching off, spray the poops with some clear spray paint.

Now the No. 2 Poop Pencil Toppers are ready for you to place on top of your favorite pencils! They should fit perfectly since they were made on a pencil in the first place. Kids are going to love making these to show off at school. They would also be a fun project to make as party favors, gifts, or to share with friends!

DIY Ice Cream Pencil Toppers

If poops aren't your thing, which is totally understandable, you can transform the same hot glue swirl shape into something else just by using different paints! My daughter picked out some of our brighter Apple Barrel paints that worked perfectly...

DIY Ice Cream Sundae Pencil Toppers

Make yourself a sundae with a cherry on top! Paint the entire swirl with FolkArt Multi-Surface in white for a base coat. When that has dried, paint the bottom glue line a bright color for a bowl. The top on this one was rounded, so I painted it to look like a cherry. Last, I added some brown for some chocolate topping.

I also painted a couple others to look like ice cream topped with sprinkles. They turned out adorable!
