Summer break is upon us, which means a lot of adventure and fun in the sun! Before the time of smart phones and internet, our summers were filled with bike rides to the library to check out a bundle of books to enjoy. Even with the outrageous selection of books that are available now, there are still a ton of kids who just aren't reading enough during summer break. If you think of reading like exercising, it's going to be a lot tougher for kids to catch up the next school year if they aren't practicing during the summer.

As parents, it's important to encourage our children to keep reading through the break to at least maintain and hopefully strengthen their reading skills that they've been working on this past school year. These Reading Challenge Bookmarks I've put together are a fun way to help kids get excited about reading this summer!

Download and print the 100 Book Reading Challenge Bookmarks on cardstock. Use a paper trimmer or scissors to cut out the bookmarks. There are 3 bookmarks on a page.

Use a scoring tool and a ruler to score fold lines along the dotted line in the center of the bookmarks. This will help the paper to fold easier with a cleaner fold line.

Add a few lines of tape runner or use some glue on the back of the bookmark. Fold the bookmark closed and press the sides together well.

Now it's time to get reading! Each side of the bookmark has 50 spaces to color in each time you read a book. Use the bookmark to keep your place while you read so that it doesn't get lost and can be used as a reminder of your goal.

If you have a reluctant reader, there are some things you can do to help get them excited about the challenge:
  • Let them choose the books! Make sure they are at appropriate age and reading level, but they will learn to love reading a whole lot more if they are enjoying the stories.
  • Make an incentive together to earn rewards for reading. For example, after reading 10 books, they can have a trip to get an ice cream cone. Read 25, and they get to choose a new book.
  • Read together with your child. Not only does this make a special time for the both of you, but it can also help their listening skills and vocabulary. By asking questions and having discussions while reading, they will also learn to better understand and get more involved in what they are reading.

When both sides are completely colored, you have read 100 books! What better way to finish the summer break than to celebrate reading 100 books?!

  2. Thank you for sharing this! I am using it as a reward coupon for my grandson. He is now in chapter books, so whenever he completes a chapter he'll get a block filled.
