We love trying new desserts. LOVE. It's probably my husband's favorite part of me working on this blog is all the new recipes we try that he gets to test and see if it's good enough to share with all of you. This recipe got two over-enthusiastic thumbs up.

We originally saw this idea from the amazingly talented Alton Brown and knew that we needed to try it as soon as possible. So heat up that waffle iron, because you are going to want these homemade chocolate waffles for your next dessert!

vegetable spray (for waffle iron)
1 1/2 cups flour
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 whole eggs, beaten
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
16 ounces buttermilk, room temperature
3/4 cup chocolate chips

  1. Preheat your waffle iron and spray with vegetable spray.
  2. In a mixing bowl combine sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
  3. In another bowl, beat together eggs, melted butter, vanilla. Then, add the buttermilk.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Stir in chocolate chips. Allow mix to rest for about 5 minutes.
  6. Pour mix into the waffle iron and cook until the waffle is crispy and is easily removed from the iron.
  7. Serve the waffles immediately (best when topped with ice cream and sprinkles). You can also keep the waffles warm in a 200º F oven until ready to serve.
