DIY Heart Eyes Emoji Shirt

With Valentine's Day quickly on its way, my daughter and I collaborated on ideas for a new shirt for her to wear on the big day. She loves texting her aunts, so one of her suggestions was to put a heart eye emoji on the front of a shirt. How can I say no to that?! With some help from Expressions Vinyl, I think we created something that's #AllTheHeartEyes!!

Download the Heart Eyes Emoji cut file to use with a Cricut Explore machine or other vinyl cutter to create your own shirt. You'll also need yellow, red, and black heat transfer vinyl (HTV), a clean shirt, and an iron. When cutting out HTV, make sure you mirror all the images! The pieces will be ironed on in layers, so take your time for best results.

The first layer of HTV will be the yellow face. I cut mine out with yellow StripFlock HTV for a fun, fuzzy effect and placed it in the center of the shirt. For best results with HTV, press the sticky transfer tape down first to help keep the image in place. Carefully cover with a cloth and get your iron heated up - highest heat and no steam. Place the iron down over the vinyl and apply pressure for 20-30 seconds. Let the vinyl cool, and remove the transfer tape. If for some reason the vinyl doesn't stick to the shirt, cover it with the cloth and iron again.

Next, place the eyes and mouth on the face. The mouth is cut out of black StripFlock HTV, and the eyes are red Glitter HTV (because Valentine projects or anything with hearts are always better with glitter!). If you cut with a vinyl cutting machine, the pieces should fit perfectly. The sticky transfer tape over the vinyl is such a great help in keeping the vinyl in place on projects like this. Cover the face, then place the iron down over the vinyl and apply pressure for 20-30 seconds. Let the vinyl cool, and remove the transfer tape.

Once all the pieces are ironed in place, your shirt is now complete! If this is your first project, trust me when I say that using HTV is quite addicting and you'll be customizing your family's entire wardrobe in no time...

Since the shirt I chose was long sleeved for the cold February weather, I decided to cut out a couple of glittery heart elbow patches out of the same red Glitter HTV as the eyes. To make the patches, I cut the same hearts as the eyes but enlarged them to about 2 1/2" wide, and ironed them onto the back of the elbows on the shirt. I just love that extra sparkly detail!

My daughter can't wait to show off her Valentine's shirt, and I'm kind of glad it can be one that she can wear anytime of year so she gets a lot of wear out of it. If you make and emoji tee for yourself or your family, I would love to see it!!

  3. This is a great idea- I'm always looking for crafts and recipes that me and my three year old daughter can work on together. She's big into smiley faces right now. Maybe we could make a mother daughter version? Cheers!
