Easy Reversible Barbie Skirts

Easy Reversible Barbie Skirts at artsyfartsymama.com #fashion #Barbie

My daughter's Barbie doll collection has slowly been growing, and some of them come with little to no clothes... Being the little fashionista that she is, my daughter requested that her dolls should have a little more variety in their clothing choices. I have never sewn Barbie doll clothes before, and honestly, I've been a little scared to try. I've been kind of putting it off for a while, but then I received a few fun colors of Oly*Fun fabric from Fairfield World and knew it would be a fun fabric to work with for Barbie and her friends to get some new skirts!

Oly*Fun fabric doesn't fray, which means there's no hemming involved - which is perfect for this Barbie skirt project! Start by tracing the Barbie Reversible Circle Skirt printable pattern on two different color fabrics using a water-soluble or disappearing ink marker. For this tutorial, I used Sea Green and Lemondrop fabrics.

Cut the circles out right on the line or just inside. Once the circles are cut out, pin around the circles to prevent the skirt from shifting while you sew on the waistband.

Using some wide, white bias tape, I carefully wrapped it around the inner circle and pinned it in place. Make sure the pin has gone through both skirt layers and that the bias tape is sitting a little bit above the skirt. Once you've pinned the waistband completely, you can remove the pins holding the outer skirt together.

If you want to skip a step, you could easily use some wide fold over elastic in different colors for a different look!

Starting at the bias tape seam, sew along the bottom edge of the bias tape in a zig zag stitch. Go slowly and pull the pins out as you go. If you need to raise the foot to adjust, make sure the needle is down so you don't miss any spots or have the skirt shift!

My sewing isn't perfect, but here's how it should look when you're done. No one will be able to tell that it's not perfect when you're done, and hopefully your Barbies aren't going to complain! You can try the skirt on the Barbie to make sure it fits over the widest part of her hips. I've tried it on a bunch of different kinds of Barbies and it seemed to fit them all, so hopefully you won't have any problems.

Check along the edge to make sure you got everything sewn together. Flip the skirt over to check the other side.

Cut a piece of thin elastic about 3.5" long. Add a safety pin to each end. Thread one end through the opening in the bias tape seam and pull it all the way through. The second safety pin will just help the other end of the elastic from getting pulled into the waistband.

Once you have both ends of the elastic through the waistband, overlap them and sew them together with your sewing machine or by hand. Once they are sewn together, tuck the elastic into the waistband, and try to fold the open edges of the bias tape in. Lay them flat and sew a zig zag stitch over the opening a few times to finish the waistband.

Now the skirt is all done! Our lovely model is sporting the Kiwi and Orchid skirt. The skirt is easy to flip around (I had a four year old test it out for me to make sure), and I love how it gives a whole new look!

Since the Oly*Fun fabric comes in so many different colors, you'll have so many options for different skirts! My daughter loves the new reversible skirts, and now all the Barbies are covered!! Each skirt took me about 20-25 minutes to make from start to finish.
