Schitt's Creek Baby Onesies

Dress your bébé up in style with a collection of handmade Schitt's Creek Baby Onesies!

Schitt's Creek Baby Onesies

My sister-in-law is about to have a baby, and I couldn't be more excited about it!! One of my sister-in-law's favorite shows (and mine, too) is Schitt's Creek. That show is so quotable, so I decided create a small wardrobe inspired by the iconic Rose family using custom stencils I made using my Ikonart Custom Stencil Kit. I was nervous about stenciling on fabric, but I am SO glad I finally gave it a try! I am blown away by how easy it was to make custom, professional-looking baby clothing all on my own!

New to making reusable stencils? Here's how to Get Started with Ikonart!

To make your own set of stenciled Schitt's Creek Baby Onesies, you will need these supplies:

To make a stencil, you need to start with a printed design. Download the Schitt's Creek Baby Designs and size the designs to fit the onesies. Arrange the designs and print as dark as possible on either inkjet or laser Ikonart Printer Film.

The next step in the process is to expose the stencil film. For this project, you need to use the purple Ikonart Textile Film instead of the blue Ikonart Stencil Film. The purple film works just like the blue film, but it's stickier and a little more stiff, which makes it perfect for using on fabric and other textured or difficult surfaces.

Set up the exposure stand with UV LED Light by following the directions included in the kit. The Textile Film is light sensitive, so be careful to keep it out of sunlight and bright lights before exposure. Cut a piece of the film the same size as the design print.

Lay the piece of film down on the base of the stand with the textured side facing UP. Place the printed design on top of the stencil film, making sure it's right-side up - meaning that if there are words in your design, you should be able to read them.

Lastly, place the clear exposure sheet (found in the stencil film pack) on top and press it down well to seal the design tight against the stencil film. Turn the exposure light on and expose the film for 30-35 seconds.

The final step in the stencil-making process is to washout, or rinse, the stencil. Clip the exposed stencil film to the Ikonart clipboard with the shiny side (carrier sheet) touching the clipboard. Use the kitchen sink sprayer to rinse the stencil film with warm water until the design shows through and becomes completely clear. The washout process shouldn't take more than 3 minutes.

Gently blot excess water off the from of the stencil, and hang or lay flat to dry for about 45 minutes. When the stencil is dry, you shouldn't see any water spots or discoloration. Once the stencil is completely dried, place the it back on the exposure stand and expose it again for at least 2 minutes without the clear cover sheet. This extra exposure will increase the durability of the stencil so you can get as much use out of it as possible.

Use scissors to carefully cut the stencils apart. Be sure to leave a good amount of space around the stencil designs!! Use a permanent marker and write "back" on the carrier sheet (shiny side) on the back of the stencil. This helps to put the carrier sheet and the stencil back together the right way after you are done using it.

Using an adhesive textile mat helps make screen printing so much easier. The mat holds the fabric in place, and helps to block the paint or ink from bleeding through to the back. For adult shirts and larger fabric projects, the full-size mat works beautifully. Onesies are significantly smaller, so I would recommend cutting the mat into fourths. Cutting the mat into pieces is also a bonus because you will have four mats to work with to make multiple onesies at a time!

Remove the carrier sheet from the front of the mat, and slide it into the onesie with the adhesive-side up. Make sure the onesie isn't stretched out, doesn't have any wrinkles, and press it down well against the mat. Use a lint roller to remove any debris from the front of the onesie.

Center the stencil on the front of the onesie, about an inch or so below the neckline. Press the stencil down well against the fabric, making sure that it's completely flat. For this onesie, I applied some white fabric paint to the side of the stencil, and then used the squeegee to lightly pull the paint across the stencil. Keep dragging the paint over the stencil until it has been completely covered. Scrape away the excess paint and put it back into the bottle.

Carefully lift the stencil at one corner and pull it up about halfway. If you see any areas that need more coverage, lay the stencil back down and go over it again with the fabric paint and squeegee. Lift the stencil again and remove when you are satisfied with the coverage.

Isn't this miniature version of David Rose's iconic sweater the cutest thing you've ever seen?!

Carefully remove the textile mat from the inside of the onesie, and try your best not to fold the fabric over into the paint. Lay the onesie flat or hang it up to wait for the paint to dry.

Making multiple onesies at a time couldn't be easier when using the Ikonart stencils. Simply put the mat inside, stick the stencil in place, and cover with your favorite fabric ink or paint. This onesie is going to have "The Bébé", which is said in Moira Rose's signature accent. Makes me laugh every time.

For this onesie, I wanted to give Speedball fabric ink a try so I can compare it to the fabric paint. Scoop a little ink onto the squeegee, and lightly drag it across the stencil until the design is completely covered. The ink is a lot thicker than the paint, but it was just as easy to spread across the stencil.

Peel the stencil away slowly, laying it back down if you need to add more ink to any missed spots. Carefully remove the mat from inside the onesie, and let the ink dry. Did you know that you can make multiple onesies with the same stencil?! Get the next onesie ready to go, and then remove the stencil from the previous onesie. Without washing the ink off, place it onto the next onesie, and ink it up. Remove the stencil, and repeat as many times as needed. This is FANTASTIC for someone making stenciled projects to sell, or just want to make multiples of the same project. Below is a helpful video from Ikonart to show how exactly how to do this.

Once the stencil is removed, wash it off immediately. To wash your stencil so that it can be used again and again, first get the clipboard wet so your stencil doesn't stick to it. Place the stencil on the clipboard with the textured side up, and lightly rub the stencil under cold running water to remove all the paint.

Do not rub or scrub the adhesive side of the stencil, and NEVER use anything other than water to wash the stencils. To prevent the stencil from breaking down, don't ever leave the stencils to soak.

Remove the stencil from the clipboard and lay it down with the adhesive side up. While the stencil is still wet, place the carrier sheet onto the stencil so that the word “BACK” is readable. Hang or lay the stencil flat to dry completely.

I made stencils to apply to the bum of the onesies, so I needed the fabric paint to dry a bit quicker. To move things along, you can use a hair dryer on low heat. Carefully line up or stack the onesies next to each other, and blow the air over the inked areas.

Schitt's Creek Baby Onesies

Aren't these Schitt's Creek-inspired onesies SO cute? I can't wait for the bébé to arrive and wear these adorable clothes. Plus, it's a bonus for the new mommy to get a laugh when she dresses them in one of these outfits.

Schitt's Creek Baby Onesies

Not only did I make designs for the fronts of the onesies, but I made silly designs to go on the bums as a hilarious addition. As long as the fabric paint is dry to the touch and won't transfer to your workspace, you can apply the stencils to the backs using the same instructions as above.

Let the fabric paint dry for at least 24 hours, and then heat-set the paint using an iron or EasyPress. The onesies are completely washable, and the designs won't peel or wrinkle like HTV. I am blown away by how easy it is to make custom, professional-looking baby clothing in your own home!
