It's so much fun decorating for Halloween!! I like to go more for the fun side of Halloween decor rather than the creepy, so I made a cute (and honest) sign to hang up with my other decor. The other fun part? The sign is made of styrofoam so it weighs practically nothing!

To make this sign, you'll need:
FloraCraft® Make it: Fun® foam block 12" x 18" x 1"
FloraCraft® Smooth Finish (1-2 containers)
Acrylic Paint - black, white, orange, yellow
Vinyl or stencils

Using a putty knife or spatula, stir up the jar of Smooth Finish. It should be the consistency of frosting. If it seems clumpy, just add a little bit of water to thin it out. Then, spread the Smooth Finish over the front and sides of the board until it is completely covered (one 8 oz. container covered the front and sides of mine). Let the Smooth Finish dry completely.

While one container did the job just fine, I would recommend having another container to give the board an extra coat on the front and to cover the back with a coat. I didn't have enough to do the back, so the styrofoam would "snow" all over everything every time I moved it.

Once the Smooth Finish is dry, you can paint the board! If you don't like the texture, you can lightly sand it down. I kept it as-is. I painted two coats of a metallic black acrylic paint to the front and sides. Since the Smooth Finish has covered the styrofoam, you could even use a spray paint if you wanted to. I also painted the back with some regular black acrylic paint using a sponge brush to help keep the foam from flaking every time I touched it.

While the paint is drying, I put together my design in Cricut Design Space™ and cut it out with my Cricut Explore™. Weed out the words, apply the vinyl to the board with transfer paper, and you're left with a great vinyl stencil!!

The vinyl should stick pretty well (but not too well) to the board so that you can paint the words on. Dab a sponge brush in the paint, then tap off excess before painting. Too much paint, and you'll get paint bleeding under the stencil. Just remember to paint thin coats, and you should be fine.

I wanted the word "candy" to look like candy corn, so I started by painting the top 1/3 or so with white paint. To cover the black, you'll need at least 3 coats. Work slowly so that each coat can dry before you add another coat. Once the white section is done, work on the orange section, then the yellow. No, my lines aren't perfectly straight or even, but I figured that neither are candy corns, so it works. Right??

Slowly peel up the vinyl as soon as you're done painting. If you have any paint peel up or bleed, just touch it up with a small paint brush. Attach some of the jute twine to the back of the sign, and you're done! Hang it up with your other Halloween decor and enjoy!
