Back to School with SKECHERS

Thanks to SKECHERS for the awesome back to school shoes featured in this post!

Back to school shopping was something I looked forward to at the end of every summer. My daughter is wearing a uniform to school this year, so we were able to get the clothing part (aka the hardest part) of the shopping done in a snap. However, she was given the freedom to choose some active shoes to wear with her uniform. She wanted to choose some shoes that show off her personal style, and I was hoping to find something that will last throughout the school year...

Of course, her first pick was the SKECHERS Twinkle Toes Shuffles Magic Madness shoes! She had some really cute Twinkle Toes that she wore last year and loved them. These pair are her favorite colors - purple, pink and teal, with a whole lot of sparkle. The mix of glitter and tie-dye effect is a combination that just can't be beat.

Not only are the shoes stylish for this little fashionista, but there are some awesome features to the shoes. The soles are high quality and comfortable, which means that they are going to hold up as long as her feet fit in them! The Twinkle Toes effect is always a favorite feature to girls everywhere, but during class, you can turn off the lights with the push of a button.

High top shoes were always a problem for me growing up as I would try to stuff my foot in and end of folding the back over, or getting the tongue squished down into the shoe. These shoes have a bright pink zipper down the inner side of the shoe to give those feet a little extra room to get them on. It's also been quite the time saver since she can usually leave the shoelaces tied and then can slip them on and off using just the zipper!

The other pair she chose was the SKECHERS Skech-Air Laser Lite shoes. These are perfect for kids that will be on their feet a lot and keeping active. They are incredibly light and come in a variety of colors. I kind of want a pair for myself now...

These shoes don't light up like the Twinkle Toes, but they do have some really great features! The laser-printed fabric is soft yet stabilizing to keep feet where they're supposed to be. They also ventilate quite well to keep feet dry! Air pillow pockets on the sole and memory foam on the inside of the shoe really keep her feeling like she's "walking on a trampoline that is softer than air!" Oh, kids are funny...

Have you found any great shoes lately? What are your kids wearing to school?

Personalized Pencil Teacher Gift

Personalized Pencil Teacher Gift Tutorial at artsyfartsymama.com

Back to school season is one of my favorite times of the year. My daughter lucked out in the teacher department at school this year and has one of the best teachers I could have imagined for her. To give a pre-emptive "thank you", we decided to make her a personalized gift using Expressions Vinyl that she can display in her classroom.

Just for fun, my fellow Expressions Vinyl Ambassadors and I are having a little vinyl competition! I would love, love, love for you to head over to the Expressions Vinyl blog to vote for my project to win yourself a prize at the same time!!

Personalized Pencil Teacher Gift Tutorial at artsyfartsymama.com

The personalized pencil is a lot of fun to make and I promise that even if you're a beginner, you can definitely do this!! Grab a piece of 2x4 without a lot of knots. Our teacher's name is a longer one, so we cut the board to about 15 inches. If you have a shorter name to work with, I would say you could go to about 10-12. To save some work, you can have an employee at Home Depot or Lowe's cut the board for you!

Next, you need to work on the angle of the point of your pencil. The smaller the angle, the "sharper" your pencil would be. I wanted a more "dull" pencil, so I cut mine to a about 60ยบ. Draw the angle with a pencil FIRST to make sure you get the angle you want before cutting!!

Sand the entire pencil, front and back, until smooth. I also sanded more on the corners and edges to round them out a bit. Wipe down the pencil with a damp cloth and let dry.

Now for the fun part!! Grab some acrylic paints: I used Americana brand in Lamp (Ebony) Black, Bright Yellow, Metallic Silver and Carousel Pink. I also used a soft 1/2 inch brush to paint the entire project.

First, paint the "lead" of the pencil with the black paint. I painted all the way around the pencil, and ended up painting 2-3 coats, letting each coat dry completely before adding another one.

Next, I painted the yellow. I painted the edge near the lead straight across, but you can totally paint a more jagged edge if you want. That probably looks a little more realistic than mine, plus that would really help hide any imperfections! With the yellow being a lighter color, plan to paint at least 3 coats to cover up the wood grain. I left a good 4-5 inches unpainted at the "eraser" end of the pencil.

Grab the pink paint and add an eraser to the end of the pencil. You can make this as long or as short as you want. Mine was probably about 3-3½ inches. I painted 2-3 coats of paint and left about an inch gap between the pink and yellow paints.

Personalized Pencil Teacher Gift Tutorial at artsyfartsymama.com

Make sure the paints are completely dry and wrap a straight line of painters tape around the edge of the yellow and around the edge of the pink paints. Shake the metallic silver paint really well, then paint in between the lines of the painters tape. Since I was painting over some of the messy edges of yellow and pink paints, I ended up painting about 3 coats of silver paint to make everything look even.

While the paint is still wet, remove the tape and let the pencil dry. I painted all the way around the pencil, so I just balanced the wood on top of two or three paint containers and let it dry up high so that I didn't ruin any of the paint.

Let the metallic paint dry completely. Then, use some clear polyurethane spray paint and paint a few coats on the pencil to seal the raw wood and protect the paint from getting scratched off. Be sure to let each coat of spray paint dry completely between coats to prevent any problems.

Personalized Pencil Teacher Gift Tutorial at artsyfartsymama.com

While the top coat is drying, you can work on cutting out your vinyl! I measured how much yellow space I had available and measured my wording to fit in Cricut Design Space (the font I used is Magnolia Sky) and cut it out of Expressions Vinyl Permanent Vinyl in Jet Black with my Cricut Explore machine

To apply the vinyl, I used my handy (and money-saving) vinyl transfer hack! Since I used a permanent vinyl, it will stick a bit better than regular vinyl when our teacher needs to pack her things around.

I hope Mrs. Petersen knows how excited we are to have her as a teacher this year. This was a lot of fun to make for her and I would love to hear if you make one for yourself or for your favorite teachers!

Udderly Smooth Gift Basket for a Moo-velous Teacher

Udderly Smooth Gift Basket for a Moo-velous Teacher at artsyfartsymama.com

Teachers work so hard to teach kids everything they need to know and do so much that I think it's only fair to give them something to show them how much they are appreciated. I also didn't want to give her something she didn't need. Udderly Smooth lotion is one of my favorite products to use, so we decided to go with a cow-themed gift basket for our Moo-velous teacher!

Udderly Smooth Gift Basket for a Moo-velous Teacher at artsyfartsymama.com

My skin gets so dry that most lotions don't even do anything. My husband is also sensitive to perfumes of any kind, so my choices of lotions are even more limited. Udderly Smooth has been one of the only lotion brands that has really worked to keep my skin smooth and soft. Since it has worked so well for me, I know that teachers everywhere are going to love it, too.

Not only is the lotion a great gift idea, the cow packaging is just perfect! For our basket, we included Udderly Smooth Hand Cream, Udderly Smooth Body Cream, an adorable Udderly Smooth stress cow, a cow pencil, and a mini cow bell!

Print and cut out the "Moo-velous Teacher" tag, and use a hole punch to make a hole in the top. Cut 10-12 inches of red ribbon, twine, or cord and loop it through the hole in the card. Next, thread the ribbon through the hole in the cowbell and tie the tag to your basket!

I arranged all the Udderly Smooth products in a chicken wire basket full of shredded red paper and tied a red bandana around it to give it a little more country flair. Just for fun, I also threw in a super cute Udderly Smooth coloring book! The basket jingles when you carry it around (thanks, cow bell) and is sure to be a hit with any Moo-velous teacher you know!

We are constantly reading at our house and are excited to read even more during the school year. I designed this printable book report form to hopefully help kids to have a more positive reaction to sharing what they've learned from a book. Grab the colored pencils to first color the book report, rate the book and even draw your favorite scene!

Once the coloring is done, kids can write about the book, including the title, the main character, the story's setting and what their favorite part of the story was. It's a great way for them to practice handwriting and sharing important information they comprehended from the book.

#KeepBuilding with LEGO Brick-tionary!

#KeepBuilding with Free Printable LEGO Brick-tionary Game at artsyfartsymama.com

I'm always looking for more ways to inspire kids to use their imagination and play creatively with LEGO®. Our Challenge Cards have been fantastic way to jump-start my daughter's imagination when she's free-playing and isn't sure what to build. Building with an objective is a helpful tip to getting kids to start building and keep building in the future. We are really excited to share another helpful way to #KeepBuilding in today's post!

LEGO Classic encourages a “no instructions necessary” building experience. The possibilities of open-ended building to inspire endless play. There are ten sets (ranging from $16.99 to $59.99) that make the perfect solution for those wanting to inspire their children to start building, to add to an existing LEGO collection, or to give as a gift. Each set includes classic LEGO bricks, a mix of special pieces and ideas to help you get started.

#KeepBuilding with Free Printable LEGO Brick-tionary Game at artsyfartsymama.com

My daughter has been obsessed with playing Pictionary lately. We're always drawing random objects and guessing all kinds of things. As we were playing with LEGO the other day, something clicked (mentally and physically). We could play something similar using the bricks - Brick-tionary! We have had a lot of fun playing so far. My daughter even helped me come up with objects to add to our printable list to share with you!

#KeepBuilding with Free Printable LEGO Brick-tionary Game at artsyfartsymama.com

Before you get started, dump out the LEGO bin and separate the bricks by color. You need to move a little bit quicker for this game, so having things organized helps a lot to find the pieces you need! Plus, how pretty is this colorfully organized view??

#KeepBuilding with Free Printable LEGO Brick-tionary Game at artsyfartsymama.com

Split into teams if you have a larger group, or play singles if it's just a few. When it's your turn, choose a Brick-tionary card and set it aside. Don't let anyone else see what you picked! Even if it seems a little too hard to build, give it a shot. You may surprise yourself!

#KeepBuilding with Free Printable LEGO Brick-tionary Game at artsyfartsymama.com

Once you have the objective, start building! Your team can start guessing as you build. Get creative and add eyes, lights, and wheels to bring your creation to life.

#KeepBuilding with Free Printable LEGO Brick-tionary Game at artsyfartsymama.com

When your team has guessed your card, your turn is over. This game is more about having fun and building awesome stuff, so we didn't use a timer. You are more than welcome to, though! I would recommend about 2 minutes or so for kids, and maybe just 1 minute for adults.

Just for fun, I wanted to share some of our other Brick-tionary creations. This volcano turned out pretty awesome!

At first, I thought this dog was a lamb, but my 6 year old said it's a poodle. I love how her imagination works.

Encourage your kids to keep building with LEGO and print out these Brick-tionary Cards for your family. There are 60 cards total with a little of everything for you to build. The download is free for you to use at home, school, church, or with friends! I hope you and your family have a blast spending time together building all kinds of new creations!

LEGO Systems and world-renowned improv group, The Upright Citizens Brigade, teamed up to show that all you need is a few bricks for hours of fun, inspiration and “out of the box thinking.” They encourage kids, parents and families to “don’t think” and let your creative juices flow. Check out this awesome video they put together:
