Customize Store-Bought Stockings with Vinyl

Over at the Expressions Vinyl Facebook Page they are having a Rock Your Stockings contest! People can upload a picture of a stocking they fancied up using vinyl, and they asked some of their favorite bloggers to get the ball rolling with some fun ideas!

I found this pretty stocking at Michael's, and used a coupon to save even more. I'm hoping to be able to donate this stocking full of goodies to a family in need this holiday, so I wanted a more neutral design to work with. When shopping for a stocking to add vinyl to, be sure to check the fabric type so it won't melt when you go to iron it!!

The swirl design on the cuff really caught my eye, so I wanted to incorporate the same design with the vinyl. I cut this swirly snowflake design out of green heat transfer vinyl and silver glitter heat transfer vinyl in Cricut Design Space with my Cricut Explore machine.

When layering heat transfer vinyl, be sure to place the regular vinyl first. You cannot add vinyl overtop of glittered vinyl. The heat transfer vinyl has an adhesive-backed transfer paper, so you can press the vinyl down and it should stay in place so you can iron it on easily! Lay a drop cloth down over the vinyl to help protect both the vinyl and fabric and press the iron down for 20-30 seconds. Let it cool, and you can peel up the transfer paper! If your design isn't sticking in some areas, run the iron over it again until it does stick.

Carefully lay the glitter vinyl over the previous vinyl design and repeat the ironing step. Now you have a gorgeous customized stocking that you had to do almost no work on at all, but it looks like something you spent hours on! Don't worry, your secret is safe with me...
