Easy Sugar Cookie Bars

It's no secret I love sugar cookies. I wanted to make some for a family Christmas party, but I just didn't have the time or energy to bake up a whole batch, frost them, and make them look pretty enough to eat. Instead, I made these Easy Sugar Cookie Bars that really are easy to whip up, and feed a large group without all the work!

Easy Sugar Cookie Bars at artsyfartsymama.com

Easy Sugar Cookie Bars
Recipe slightly adapted from Shugary Sweets

Cookie Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract
2 eggs
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 3/4 cup flour

Frosting Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp salt
3 Tbsp milk
3 cup powdered sugar
sprinkles

Directions:
  1. To make the sugar cookie bars: Cream butter and sugar in until light and fluffy. Add vanilla, almond extract and eggs and mix until combined.
  2. Slowly add in flour, baking powder and salt, and mix until just combined.
  3. Using floured hands, drop dough onto jelly roll pan (15x10 baking sheet) and press dough into pan until evenly distributed.
  4. Bake at 350º for 16-18 minutes. Do not overbake or the cookie bars will be dry. Remove from oven and cool completely.
  5. To make the frosting: cream butter and vanilla until fluffy. Add salt, powdered sugar and milk and mix until fluffy and fully combined. If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk. If the frosting is too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar.

  7. Cut into squares and serve.

Easy Peanut Butter Cup Gingerbread Men

One of the first recipes I ever learned to make was homemade peanut butter cups. My sisters and I would whip them up all summer long. You probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry, and they taste just like Reese's!! They are incredibly simple to make, and are a fun addition to treat plates at Christmastime!

Peanut Butter Cup Gingerbread Men Recipe at artsyfartsymama.com

Easy Peanut Butter Cups

Ingredients:
1 cup powdered sugar
½ cup creamy peanut butter
3 Tablespoons butter, softened
12 oz milk or semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:
  1. Melt the half of the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl until smooth. Fill up silicone mold (I found a gingerbread man one at Michael's) cavities about 1/3 of the way with a spoon or with a piping bag (or baggie with the corner cut off).
  2. Tap the mold on the counter a few times to help the chocolate set into the mold and release air bubbles.
  3. Place in fridge for 5-10 minutes or until chocolate is set.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, peanut butter and butter. Shape into ½-inch balls and place on wax or parchment paper.
  5. Press the peanut butter balls into the cavities over the cooled chocolate.
  6. Melt the other half of the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl until smooth. Fill up silicone mold cavities the rest of the way with a spoon or with a piping bag. Tap the mold on the counter again and refrigerate for 5-10 minutes.
  7. Carefully pop the peanut butter cups out of the molds and enjoy! Keep the peanut butter cups refrigerated or frozen.

Minions Movie Night Donuts #MinionsMovieNight

One of our favorite movies we saw this summer was Illumination Entertainment's Minions movie. It's finally out on DVD, so I decided to make some minions-inspired donuts to eat at our family Minions movie night!

Purchase the Minions movie at your local Target! #MinionsMovieNight!

Target is your perfect one stop shop for all your movie night needs. As you enter Target, you should be able to see the display for Minions © 2015 Universal Studios. All rights reserved. The Target-exclusive Metalpak Blu-Ray/DVD – Deluxe Version includes 40 minutes of exclusive content, including a Minions Party Planner. From invitations, to decorations, to recipes and everything in-between, the minions will help you create an amazing party!

Bake some Minions Donuts to enjoy at your next #MinionsMovieNight!

While I was at Target I was able to pick up all the ingredients I needed to bake some Minions Donuts! I saved money by purchasing the Market Pantry brand of ingredients like chocolate chips, sour cream, and other baking supplies.

Minions Movie Night Donuts

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 stick butter, cold and cubed
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
2 tsp vanilla

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350º.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, baking soda, nutmeg. Add butter and cut it in with a fork or pastry cutter.
  3. Whisk eggs until frothy, then stir in sour cream and vanilla.
  4. Pour egg mixture into flour mixture and stir until combined.
  5. Fill greased donut pan cavities 2/3 full. Bake at 350º for 9-11 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let the donuts cool for 5 minutes, then place them on a cooling rack. Let the donuts cool completely before adding icing.

Minions Movie Night Donuts #MinionsMovieNight

After the donuts have completely cooled, you can prepare the icing. If you have a favorite icing recipe, feel free to use it!! I took the easy route and heated up a can of vanilla frosting in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Stir until it's a smooth consistency. Add about 5 drops of yellow food coloring in, and mix until the color is evenly distributed throughout the icing.

Find a bowl that will fit a donut (I just used a regular cereal bowl) and pour the icing in. Now, just dip the donuts into the icing, then lift straight up. Turn your wrist a little as you lift the donut so you can get the donut to stop dripping. Set on the cooling rack.

Once your donuts are all dipped, sprinkle generously with some bright yellow nonpareils. Donuts are always better with sprinkles, so go as wild as a minion with bananas!

Minions Movie Night Donuts #MinionsMovieNight

To turn these regular donuts into Minions donuts, they need some eyes and goggles. Grab some white and milk chocolate chips, as well as some gray (or black & white) candy melts. Unless you want to freehand them, you'll also need a guide to work from. Lucky for you, I've got a free printable minions goggles pattern, which includes 4 double eyes and 6 single eyes!! Place the print on a cookie sheet, then layer some wax paper on top.

Add some gray candy melts into a bowl and microwave for one minute. Stir and microwave another 20-30 seconds until everything is melted and a smooth consistency. If you are using black & white candy melts, add one black melt for every two white melts (I think I added about 14 whites and 7 blacks to make enough goggles for 12 donuts). Pour the gray chocolate into a baggie and cut off a small corner or use a icing bag with a small tip. Trace the outer border of all the eyes/goggles so that you have a bunch of circles and figure 8s (left image above).

To fill in the eyes, melt some white chocolate and pour it into a baggie or icing bag. Fill in the inside of the gray circles. For the double eyes, you can immediately place a chocolate chip point-side down for the irises. For the single eyes, melt about 1/4 cup of milk chocolate chips and pipe them on the white chocolate.

Place the cookie sheet with the eyes in the fridge for at least 10 minutes to set.

Minions Movie Night Donuts #MinionsMovieNight

Peel the eyes off the wax paper and press them down on the center of the donuts. I kept things simple by only adding the eyes and goggles, but you can also use some black decorating gel to add hair, mouths, and goggle bands. After your donuts are finished, you can get that Minions party started!

We are so excited to have our movie night and will even be playing some Minions bingo! Have you and your family seen Minions yet? I'd love to hear what kind of treats would you serve at your Minions movie night!

Free Printable Doodle Christmas Gift Tags at artsyfartsymama #relaxandcolor #coloringwithMichaels

With the craziness of the Holidays upon us, I think we can all honestly say we need a little time to sit down and relax. One of my favorite ways to get my mind off of the to-do list is to color. Yes, color! There's a reason the trend of doodling and “adult coloring” on the rise, and that's because it's so therapeutic to be able to create art in just minutes. I've created some free printable doodle Christmas tags for you to add to your gifts this year, so take a deep breath and wrap those gifts... then get ready to color the stress away!

Free Printable Doodle Christmas Gift Tags at artsyfartsymama #relaxandcolor #coloringwithMichaels

For any doodling or coloring project, you'll need the right tools. I found the Prismacolor Premier colored pencils and illustration markers at Michaels. They have every color you would ever need to choose from for your colorful creations. To save money (which is important this time of year), make sure to check out Michaels coupons for additional savings in newspapers and online!

Free Printable Doodle Christmas Gift Tags at artsyfartsymama #relaxandcolor #coloringwithMichaels

There are 9 different gift tags with holiday quotes (plus a few silly ones) included in the printable, all pre-doodled for you and ready to be colored. If you really want them to look like you've drawn them all yourself (it's okay, your secret's safe with me!), feel free to trace the gift tags onto the paper of your choice with the Prismacolor Premier illustration markers, then color them in when you're done!

Free Printable Doodle Christmas Gift Tags at artsyfartsymama #relaxandcolor #coloringwithMichaels

I've been a colorer (is that a word? It is now.) and doodler all my life, and I've used almost every kind of colored pencil out there. If you're looking to pick up the coloring hobby, the Prismacolor Premier colored pencils are definitely worth the splurge. They color smooth, brilliant and I love how you can easily blend colors together without it looking streaky like other pencils do.

Some of my best tips for coloring are to start with the edges and work your way in. Go back around the edges, but color a bit darker, and lighten up to the center as you go. Then you can use a different shade of the same color and blend that color into the center. You can kind of see the different greens in the top left leaf on the gift tag above for an example.

Also, remember to have FUN!! Your coloring doesn't have to be perfect! Like most things in life, the more you practice the better you'll get at it. Most importantly, enjoy the journey and take some time to unwind.

Once you're done coloring, attach the gift tag to your gifts (heck - why not doodle/color the gift wrap, too?) and grab your favorite drink to celebrate being done with getting those gifts wrapped! Even if you aren't a "crafty" person, this is definitely a Christmas craft ANYONE can do. My daughter loved getting to spend time coloring with me and was inspired to add her own tags to gifts for friends and family.

Easy to Sew Leggings Tutorial and Winter Shoe Shopping at artsyfartsymama.com #ohsofamous

Kids grow too fast. School just started a few months ago, and her pants are already starting to get floody on her. After creating a pattern to make some 18 inch doll leggings, I decided to apply the same tutorial and adjust it to sew up some new shiny (literally), longer leggings that will hopefully last her all winter long. Luckily, we were already needing to purchase new shoes for her to wear this winter, so maybe we can hide those older, shorter pant hems in some boots and high tops!

Chocolate Chip Snowball Cookies at artsyfartsymama.com

I'm always looking for new cookie recipes to try during the holidays for parties, sharing with friends & neighbors, and of course to enjoy with a mug of hot chocolate. Snowball Cookies have been on my list to try for a long time, and I have no idea why I waited so long!! They are fun for kids to help bake, and you most likely already have all the ingredients in your pantry!

Chocolate Chip Snowball Cookies
Recipe adapted from AllRecipes

Ingredients:
1 cup butter
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
more powdered sugar for rolling

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350º.
  2. Cream the butter with 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and vanilla.
  3. Mix in the flour and salt. Add mini chocolate chips.
  4. Roll about 1 tablespoon of dough into balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake until bottoms are golden, which is about 12-15 minutes.
  6. Do not overbake! It's better to undercook them than to overcook them.
  7. Pour 1/2 cup powdered sugar into a bowl. While cookies are still hot, roll them in the powdered sugar and let them cool on a baking rack. Once they have completely cooled, roll the cookies in the powdered sugar again. They don't look too coated after the first time, but the second coating will give you the beautiful snowball look that these cookies are famous for.

If you aren't a fan of chocolate chips or just want to add some variety, you could substitute or add finely crushed candy canes, nuts or even bake the cookies plain! I hope you enjoy baking this holiday season and I'd love to hear if you try these chocolate chip snowball cookies out!!

My daughter has been asking to learn to cook lately, so I am really looking forward to giving her her own Caboodle this year for her birthday packed with everything she needs to create her favorite recipes!
