Summer Lovin' Word Set

Summer Lovin' Word Set at artsyfartsymama.com #summer #WoodCreations

It's always a lot of fun creating new decor for a new season! As soon as I saw this Summer Lovin' Set from Wood Creations, I knew I just needed to have it. The design is adorable, and besides the fact that it literally says, "summer", the sun and watermelon shapes mixed with the fun colors just bring the summer season into our home (without the heat)!

Even if you aren't much of a crafter, these word sets are so fun to put together and are easy to customize to fit your decor style. Wood Creations has three store locations (2 in Utah, 1 in Idaho), and they can also ship the unfinished sets to you if you don't live near the stores.

The set arrives ready to go, but I always do a little light sanding the edges of all the letters and pieces of the set.

Paint all the pieces with acrylic paints. I usually only need to do about two coats on each piece for full coverage. If you are covering with papers, you won't need to paint the fronts (unless you really want to). Let the paint dry completely between coats and before you start on any other steps.

I had some really cute papers and really wanted to cover the sun piece and the back of the watermelon with them. So, I took a chance and traced the papers and stuck them on the wood pieces with Mod Podge. Luckily, they turned out great!!

I'll be honest with you: I do not have the best record of successful Mod Podge/paper crafts. I usually mess it up somehow, or hate how it turns out, and end up ripping it off and starting over. So, when I really want to cover something, I try to do it in small pieces... I envy all you with the skills to do it perfectly!! So, honestly, I can't really give you any tips. Just keep practicing, I guess!! If you have any great tips to share, please leave me a comment! I need all the help I can get.

I covered the rest of the letters, front of the watermelon, and the back/rays of the sun with glitters. I just love how they look all together, sparkling when the light hits it. So fun!!

Glittering is pretty simple, and I'd like to think fool-proof. With a sponge brush, paint the front of the letter/shape with an even coat of Mod Podge. Place the letter/shape on a scrap piece of paper, and pour the glitter over the entire letter. Let sit for a minute or two, then stand the letter up on the paper and gently tap the letter to shake off any excess glitter. Then, carefully roll the paper into a cone to funnel the glitter back into the container.

Set the letter/shape somewhere where it won't be bumped or bothered for a few hours (or overnight if you're nervous about it). Then, place all the pieces onto a scrap piece of cardboard and give them a few coats of clear spray paint to seal in the glitter. This really helps so you don't have a huge mess of glitter every time you move the letters around.

The Summer Lovin' Set also comes with vinyl. Apply the vinyl to the block, the front of the sun, and the watermelon. The watermelon front was covered in glitter, but I added a bit more clear spray paint to help it be a more even surface for the vinyl to stick to - and it worked great!!

Glue the front of the watermelon to the larger watermelon piece, and the sun pieces together with some E6000 or hot glue. Then, glue the sun onto the "S". Let dry completely, and your Summer Lovin' Set is complete!!
