Valentine Tissue Paper Heart

I'm excited to announce that I am part of Elmer's "Crafty Mamas" Blogger Crew this year and am going to be sharing lots of seasonal project ideas using Elmer's products that you can create with the kids. Today's project is our first one, just in time for Valentine's Day!

My daughter has been having a lot of fun getting our home ready for Valentine's Day this year. We had room on the wall for one more decoration, so I got out some supplies to create a sweet Valentine heart with tissue paper!!

Supplies:
Elmer's 8x10 Foam Board
X-ACTO Curve™ Knife
Elmer's School Glue
Red Tissue Paper
Scissors
Pen or Pencil

Draw a heart on the foam board, or trace a stencil. You can create your own heart stencil by folding a paper in half, and drawing half of a heart on the paper fold. Cut on your line, then you'll have a heart! Trace around the paper heart on the foam board.

Carefully cut out the heart with the X-ACTO knife over a cutting board or cardboard box. The X-ACTO Curve™ Knife has a padded grip to help you control your cuts and is A LOT more comfortable on your fingers!

Once your foam board heart is cut out, get out the Elmer's glue, tissue paper, and scissors. Remove the tissue paper from the packaging and cut a bunch of 1-2 inch squares or rectangles. They don't have to be perfect, just similar in size. Cut out a bunch - more than you think you'll need. You don't want to run out while you're in the middle of the project!

"Scribble" the glue to cover about a 2 inch section of the heart, starting at the side. You can glue a larger section, but be careful not to let the glue dry before you get to it.

Crumple up one tissue paper square/rectangle, and press it down in the glue starting at the edge. Add each new piece right next to another piece of tissue paper so you don't have any empty spaces. If you happen to have an empty spot, just crumple up another piece and add it on! Add a drop of glue if necessary.

Keep adding glue sections and tissue paper squares until the entire heart is covered. Then, I taped the edges of a sparkly gold ribbon to the back of the heart and hung it up on the wall. Or write on the back of the foam board with a marker to turn this into a unique Valentine!!

If you don't have a foam board or want to do this as a group activity, you could use a cardstock or construction paper instead. Then, use a glue stick for attaching the tissue paper squares for faster drying and minimizes any glue leaking through the paper.
